WHAT IS BUCKTHORN?

Glossy buckthorn and Common buckthorn are non-native species of
buckthorn that are a concern in Minnesota. These buckthorns were
brought to the United States from Europe in the 1800’s for use as an
ornamental shrub or hedge species. Many buckthorn hedges can
still be found throughout Minnesota. However, nurseries stopped
selling buckthorn in the 1930s.

Glossy and common buckthorns are both listed as Restricted
Noxious Weeds by the State of Minnesota. It is illegal to import, sell
or transport buckthorn in Minnesota. Both of these forms are highly
invasive in native habitats throughout Minnesota. They aggressively
invade wetlands, woodlands, meadows and other areas.
